Potassium Retention in Crab Nerve
Spectrophotometric determinations of the potassium content of small volumes of sea water brought into contact with crab nerves over half-hour intervals demonstrate (a) a continuous loss of potassium from the fibers while at rest in oxygen; (b) an appreciable increase in the leakage during anoxia; (c) a reabsorption of potassium during postanoxic recovery; and (d) a reduction in the amplitude of...
متن کاملStabilization of Spider Crab Nerve Membranes by Alkaline Earths, as Manifested in Resting Potential Measurements
1. The alkaline earths, Ba, Sr, Ca, and Mg, in isotonic solutions of their chlorides, have, in general, no effect upon the resting potential of non-medullated spider crab nerve. 2. Ba, Sr, and Ca can, however, prevent the depressing action of K upon the resting potential. The order of effectiveness of these ions in this regard is the following: Ba > Sr > Ca. 3. Ba, Sr, Ca, and Mg oppose the dep...
متن کاملThe cutaneous branch of the mylohyoid nerve in the crab-eating monkey (Macaca fascicularis).
Cutaneous branches of the mylohyoid nerve were observed in both sides of 25 (83.3%) and in one side of 5 (16.7%) out of 30 crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). The branch supply the skin and sinus hairs at the mental part. These sinus hairs seem to be the intermandibular sinus hairs according to the manner of nerve supply.
متن کاملDevelopment of the chitosan tube prepared from crab tendon for nerve regeneration
Crystalline chitosan was successfully prepared from crab tendons with aligned chitin molecules. Chitosan obtained preserved the tube structure with a suitable size for nerve conduits (t-chitosan tube). The chitosan tubes were compounded with hydroxy apatite (HAp) using an alternate soaking method (t-chitosan/HAp tube) to enhance the strength of the tube walls. HAp crystals formed in the walls o...
متن کاملBlue Crab Summary_Blue Crab Status02001-8.5x11
The blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, is a keystone species which plays an integral ecological, economic, and sociological role in Chesapeake Bay. The blue crab functions as both predator and prey in the Bay’s complex estuarine foodweb and occupies a variety of critical habitats impacted by human activity. Blue crabs exhibit a complex life history, disperse between estuarine and marine habitats, ...
